The Harwood Arms - Best pub food in Fulham?!

The Harwood Arms has been on my hit list for many, many years! Before I moved to Parsons Green I frequented their monthly quiz nights and sat, providing no help whatsoever, eating one of their legendary scotch eggs with a glass of vino hoping just one answer would spring to mind - general knowledge is not my strongest subject.

Seven of us (and a dog) popped in for Sunday lunch and we were greeted with a roaring fire and friendly faces. The pub was packed (you do have to book with C.card details a little in advance)with people enjoying what looked like fantastic Sunday roast boards and delicious wines, thankfully with hungry tummies our high hopes were not soured!

My brother's eyes widened as a roast beef, bone marrow platter zoomed through to the dining room and I think his decision was set.

The menu changes regularly, is seasonal and reads very well with one special from each course on that day scrawled upon blackboards dotted around the room.

Warm doorstops of ciabatta were served along side churned butter whilst we tried to decide what eat. Trying to be healthy and failing miserably I went for something slightly out of my comfort zone but have always wanted to try... faggots. In The Harwood's case they're the posh version of 'game faggots, celeriac and smoked bone marrow'. Expecting this to be a rather filling dish I was surprised and happy when three delicate little patties arrived which were absolutely scrummylicious!

Mr D chose the butternut squash soup with squid and garlic, not the prettiest to photograph but this was another delicious winner and one of the lighter options on that day.

Mum had the special starter of the day which was cured salmon and served with fresh apple shavings and a horseradish cream.

Our mains came swiftly after and having a bit of an 'off beef week' I went for the Cornish sea bass with brown shrimp, hispi cabbage and samphire. This again was a little messy  but the skin was crisp, fish perfectly cooked and the butter shrimp samphire sauce plate-
lickable! For the pescatarians out there, this is a fantastic substitute for a Sunday roast and I certainly didn't regret my decision however hard it was...

And this was the reason for the hard decision... roast rib of beef for two with Yorkshire pudding, roasties, cauliflower cheese, greens and smoked bone marrow. My brother certainly got the choice of the table it looked absolutely fantastic and was cleared rather quickly proving it did taste as good as it looked!

Roe deer was another special and this was taken up by both my parents and thoroughly enjoyed.

What I loved about the Harwood Arms is that it is a serious foodie pub but one which hasn't lost it's local pub charm. There's still tables left solely for drinking, sofas, a roaring fire and dogs are welcomed with a water bowl (as long as they're well behaved). It's this special attention that makes this place a joy to visit and one I will most definitely visit more often - maybe to test my terrible general knowledge one Tuesday quiz night.
